Under Construction

The road to your home is under construction.
Thirty miles driving, blinking
orange-lit dark, distances too long
between scattered signs warning me
of curves I know are coming.

The ride itself is pleasant, music loud,
speeding through familiar territory. Luckily
the road is open, or the others give me room.

I don’t mind the slow spots. Construction
driving takes care and caution. I am sometimes
pushed aside and forced to ride the makeshift
shoulder lane. It is natural for me to hum along
with rhythmic rumble strips.

I am hoping one day soon the drive will be
straight and smooth, with fresh and
sturdy pavement clean beneath my wheels,
and faster than ever, you
will welcome my arrival.
