In no particular order, I would like to:

1. Run (or run/walk, or participate in, or complete) a 5K.

Yesterday I started the Couch to 5K program. I figured I’d better start moving while I’m still somewhat able-bodied. I announced it at work yesterday, what I intended to do: “I’m starting Couch to 5K tonight,” I said. I told them it’s not something I’d ordinarily share with people, but I felt that saying out loud would make me more accountable. Help “keep it real.”

I was going to do it after work and before dinner, but that didn’t happen. I ended up going grocery shopping because Drake wanted to pick up a fish tank filter. Riding to work together means sharing post-work activities, which means compromise, which means not 100% “my way,” which I never handle too well, but I’m working on it. So I made dinner first, then ate it, and didn’t get to do my walk/jog until 9 at night.

As I was walk/jogging, almost immediately after gorging on pork fajitas with corn tortillas, rice and beans, my side cramped up like I haven’t felt since elementary school. Miss Korns used to make us run the mile after lunch, and I was a chubby non-athlete (things never really change). So I was in pretty searing pain for the first 15 minutes of the 30 minute exercise. I kept going, which I’m proud of, but it was tough!

Couch to 5K requires activity 3 times a week, which is 3 times a week more than I’ve been in the habit of doing. So today is my day off and tomorrow I walk/jog again. One of the worst parts of it is that my ears are too small for earbuds and I have no entertainment while I’m walk/jogging, other than trying not to die. My freakishly small ears are even too small for earbuds that have different sizes of fittings. I don’t know of a solution to this, other than to go without, and I hate it.

I am certainly planning to stick with it just to prove to myself that I can do something I thought I couldn’t do. My presumed Charcot-Marie-Tooth has been acting up, causing my finger joint to swell arthritically, which is freaking me out, and I’ve been experiencing back pain for the past several months as well. My feet hurting, I’ve more or less gotten used to.

The speed/intensity of my walk/jog is extremely low, and I’m convinced I jog slower than most people walk, but it’s something. Anything is more than what I’m used to. So tomorrow is day 2! I can do it!
